Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges) was a computer genius whose inventions were way ahead of his time. His latest project was a digital world that he would call the grid. The grid would be a revolutionary discovery for humanity once he finalized it. When his son Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund) was only a child, he used to tell him stories related to the world in the grid, but by then he hadn't found a way to enter it yet. One night, he mysteriously disappeared, leaving no trail behind him. Eventually, so much time had passed that everyone came to the conclusion that he had died, but his old friend Alan Bradley (Bruce Boxleitner) always kept in belief that he was still alive. Years later, when Sam Flynn was 27-years-old, Alan told him that he was paged from his father's pager which was supposed to be disconnected years ago, suggesting that he might still be alive indeed. Even though Sam didn't believe that his father was still alive after all these years, he took the keys of his father's old game arcade when Alan gave them to him, and went there. When he arrived at the game arcade, after wandering around for a few moments, he came across a secret passage that led him to his father's secret office. Sam started pressing random buttons on his father's main computer, then accidentally pressed one last button that led him to a whole other dimension: the grid. Sam was overwhelmed by the fact that his father had actually found a way to enter the grid. However, as soon as he stepped in it, he got held captive by programs who were led by Clu 2.0, a program that was originally created by Kevin with the ability to think and reason. Kevin created Clu to help him build the new world - along with Tron - but he turned against him and banished him from the main land.

Not long after being held captive by Clu, Sam got rescued by a program named Quorra (Olivia Wilde). Quorra took him with her to a safe place where he met his father, realizing that he had been stuck in the grid for nearly 25 years.

Quorra was a one-of-a-kind program, only survivor from a whole population that got terminated by Clu 2.0. She was Kevin's confidant, and Kevin was planning to take her to the real world because she would help humanity make an immensely considerable step in its evolution.
